Once again the Long room of the Honourable Artillery Company played host to our sold out New Year Luncheon.
Guests started to arrive for the drinks reception from 11:30am and soon filled both the Medal Room and the Court Room to enjoy a drink and Network. This was followed by lunch which was well received as it was a return to the good old Steak and Kidney pie.
Lunch was followed by the President’s Speech in which David Howard started by thanking the HAC staff for the great food and service, the committee for their hard work and dedication to the club and the members for their continued support of the London Hardwood Club. The President then spoke about the quality of the guest speakers throughout 2016, he thanked them all again for giving their time to the London Hardwood Club and our members. Five of the speakers were present at the lunch and were warmly applauded.
The President also replied to comments that the London Hardwood Club was a not relevant for the younger generation. He said that the bimonthly meetings were not ‘age’ driven, they were ‘knowledge’ driven and that the London Hardwood Club membership had a wealth of knowledge that the younger generation can and should use to enhance their own skills and strengthen the future of the timber trade.
The President’s speech was followed by the guest speaker, stand-up comedy magician Mel Mellers. Mel gave us a rollercoaster of comedy with his sharp wit, amazed us all with his magic and was a big hit with all our guests.
The raffle was sponsored by 15 member companies who had provided a fund of £1500.00 which was used to purchase an excellent range of prizes. Ticket sales raised £2500.00 which was divided equally and donated to the TTBS and Veterans Woodcraft (Phoenix House Recovery Centre wood workshop project).
After lunch the networking continued as many members ‘following tradition’ moved on to Bangers. With a side room made available to the London Hardwood Club members and extra staff behind the bar, it was a great way to round off a most enjoyable day.
