New Year Luncheon 18th January 2019
Once again the magnificent Long Room of the Honourable Artillery Company played host to our sold out New Year Luncheon.
Guests started to arrive for the drinks reception from 11:30am and soon filled both the Medal Room and the Court Room to enjoy a drink and Network. This was followed by a well-received Lunch which included the London Hardwood Clubs traditional Steak and Kidney pie.
Lunch was followed by the President’s Speech in which David Howard started by thanking the HAC staff for the great food and service, the committee for their hard work and dedication to the club and the members for their continued support of the London Hardwood Club. The President also commented on the changes within the committee, first thanking Robin Learmount for all his hard work during his 11 years on the committee and wishing him all the best for the future, then welcoming James White (Lathams) and Rupert Green (Green Timber) to their new roles on the committee. The President also had a special mention for Frank Cosentino (Tradelink) for all his hard work on putting together another successful New Year Lunceon.
The President then spoke about the quality of the guest speakers throughout 2017, he thanked them all again for giving their time to the London Hardwood Club and our members. Four of the speakers were present at the lunch and were warmly applauded.
The President also mentioned the sadness of losing friends and colleagues from the Timber Trade and named the loss of ‘Madam Tarteret’ of ‘Tarteret Sawmill’, ‘John Vincent’ of ‘Vincent Timber’, ‘Ralfe Graveley’ of ‘Illingworth Ingham’ and the President’s brother ‘Steve Howard’. A toast was proposed to ‘Absent Friends and Colleagues’ for which everyone was upstanding.
The President then commented on how the ‘Timber Trade Federation’ was working hard to support its members but lacked the support they need in return. He said that the National Hardwood Division meetings were poorly attended and sometimes struggle to get a hand full of members, he said that if we wanted the TTF’s direction in hardwood to be dictated by less than a handful of timber companies then fine, if not members should get involved, give their views, give their input and support the TTF.
The President’s speech was followed by the guest speaker, the man with many talents, ‘John Archer’ who first showed his trick that fooled ‘Pen & Teller’ on national TV then when on to entertain everyone with his comedy, his Ukulele and his first class magic which was a big hit with all our guests but we all still want to know where that balloon went.
The raffle was sponsored by 20 member companies who had provided a fund of £2000.00 which was used to purchase an excellent range of prizes. The generosity of our guests was outstanding, ticket sales raised £2800.00 which was divided equally and donated to the ‘TTBS’ and the ‘British Lung Foundation’, two very worthwhile charities.
After lunch the networking continued as many members (following tradition) moved on to Bangers. With the side room available for our members and extra staff behind the bar, the networking went on way into the late evening. It was a great way to round off a most enjoyable day.
