THE\u00a0 LONDON\u00a0 HARDWOOD\u00a0 CLUB<\/strong><\/p>\n Bi-monthly Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n Wednesday, 13th November 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n HAC<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Our guest speaker Owen Dare of the Joinery Network. \u00a0Another sell out\/full capacity meeting with 40 members and guests.<\/p>\n Owen brought us years of experience of the joinery trade and his latest venture the Joinery Network, aimed primarily at assisting the many small joinery manufacturers around the UK meet the latest requirements and benefit from improved raw material and manufacturing techniques.<\/p>\n A copy of Owen\u2019s detailed presentation is attached for download.<\/p>\n Owen\u2019s talk was followed by questions from members including:<\/p>\n Asked whether Accoya had met the relevant window tests, in particular strength, Owen confirmed that under the latest 2016 requirements and with current specifications, No it had not, but some manufacturers were working on older standards 2012 and it did pass these less stringent requirements.<\/p>\n When asked if engineered (laminated) timbers should be used for cills, he stated that they should not due to the risk of delamination as they generally have a lot of water sitting on them.<\/p>\n A member wondered whether using a finger jointed laminated material risked being weaker when rebates were cut into it, Owen said that in almost all test cases the finger joint would not be the point of failure, rather it would occur in the wood as the glue is generally stronger than the wood.<\/p>\n There was an interesting discussion over the suitability of European Oak for external joinery. In his experience this species was always problematic due to movement, finishing and using a UV blocker was essential, but wasn\u2019t often used as clients wanted a clear finish. As many present sell European Oak into the joinery trade there was some surprise at this with one member inviting Owen to see his 10 year old European Oak doors which were good as new. Owen did state that oak products would need a higher level of maintenance than other species.<\/p>\n It was asked whether a laminated timber would always pass the same tests that solid timber of the same species did and this was confirmed.<\/p>\n It was pointed out that a lot of Europeans use solid dimension stock hardwoods and this had never really caught on in the UK and the feeling was that this was due to the UK refusing short lengths which generally are more common with fixed dimension.<\/p>\n In a similar vain on the continent most window manufacturers used a fully finger jointed (KKK) product and in the UK solid outers were used more as an option (DKD).
